The first official image has been released showing the body of Pope Francis lying in state at the chapel of Santa Martha in Vatican City.

Honoring his personal wishes, Pope Francis’s body rests in a simple wooden casket rather than on a bier, which had been used for his predecessors.

He also requested to be laid to rest in a plain wooden coffin lined with zinc, in contrast to the traditional use of three nested coffins made from cypress, lead, and oak.

Activities that will happen before Pope Francis’ burial –
- Rite of the ascertainment of Pope’s death
- Procession of Pope’s coffin from Santa Marta to St Peter’s Basilica
- Rite of translation
- Wake Keep to Pope Francis’ coffin
- Mass Burial of Pope Francis.
