The world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis had been battling chronic lung disease and was hospitalized several times in the weeks leading up to his death.
Pope Francis was a trailblazer in many ways. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first born or raised outside Europe since the 8th-century Syrian pope Gregory III. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969 and became the archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998.

As pope, Francis was known for his humility, emphasis on God’s mercy, and commitment to social justice. He advocated for the poor, criticized unbridled capitalism, and called for action on climate change. He also made headlines for his progressive stance on LGBTQ+ issues, stating that individuals can be blessed as long as blessings are not given in a liturgical context.
Pope Francis’s leadership style was marked by a less formal approach to the papacy. He chose to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guest house rather than the papal apartments and made significant changes to the Catholic Church’s stance on various issues. His dedication to interreligious dialogue and commitment to the cause of refugees earned him international respect.
Pope Francis’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will live on. His tireless efforts to promote compassion, understanding, and peace will continue to inspire millions worldwide.
Aluta News extends its condolences to the Catholic community and the world at large. May Pope Francis’s legacy continue to guide us towards a more compassionate and just world.
